WILL I LIKE MACE HOUSE?

Is Mace House the right place for you and your group?

We want everyone who stays in our house to love it as much as we do, and we know that choosing a house you haven't seen can be difficult. Here are some points to consider about Mace House if you haven't stayed with us previously.

Location: If you like nature, birding, kayaking, and a comfortable family house in a quiet setting, this is the right place for you! The natural part of the Prince George tract is just one house away, and a quick kayak paddle into an undeveloped inlet gives you a chance to see bald eagles, minks, otters, and other wildlife. The water is shallow enough to be safe for most paddlers. Fishing and crabbing are delightful here, right off the dock in front of the house--and those who prefer more leisure can watch you from the hammock or the swing. Painted buntings, owls, peregrine falcons, and many other birds can be seen in the marsh or woods, or coming to the feeders on the porches.

Mace House is not on Pawley's Island itself, but on the shore of the tidal creek or marsh that separates the island from the mainland. The beach is on the island. To reach the beach, you'll need to take a boat at high tide or drive back to the highway and down to the south causeway (about 6 miles from the house to the public parking on the island). Each of these takes about 15 minutes. If you prefer to step outside and be on the beach, you might regret the distance, but if you like the marsh, the boat trip can be a big part of the fun, and a chance to see egrets, osprey, and the other wildlife of the coast.

Also, the house is one of only three rental houses in a quiet residential community, so we ask you to avoid having loud music, late parties, and large crowds. We do not rent to house parties for teenagers or college students. Parking is limited to four cars. If you like to have privacy, you'll find it here.

Children: The house is perfect for adults looking for relaxation, and for children 6-12 or older who enjoy nature, crabbing and fishing, or kayaking in the marsh. Teenagers may find the lack of entertainment and other kids a little boring, but many love the chance to boat and fish in the marsh.

The house is not childproofed, so cooking knives and cleaning supplies may be kept in low cabinets. Because of the high porch and unfenced dock, especially at high tide, the house is dangerous for children under 5, and we strongly discourage bringing children that young--do so at your own risk.

Pets: Approved pets can be happy here. Well-trained, house-broken, and flea-free pets are welcome to stay in the house or on the big front porch--an ideal place for animals to watch the world without problems. Dogs must be leashed when out of doors, and we do not have a fenced-in yard.

Stairs: You will need to climb a fairly high flight of stairs to enter the house, so people who have difficulty with stairs may find it inconvenient. Once on the main floor, though, two bedrooms, a bath, and the kitchen are all on one floor (there are two bedrooms and a bath also on the next floor).

Boats and fishing: Our dock is perfect for crabbing, fishing, and putting in kayaks, though there's little water when the tide is low. There's no way to put in larger boats at the house, but you can put them in at the landing on the island and bring them over when the tide is high.

Ask us: Don't hesitate to call or email if you have questions about using the house.
